| Hi Kelly,
Your new eyes just arrived and I had the first pair installed (in the Karloff Frankenstein) within five minutes of opening the package. Let me try to jot down my comments while they are still fresh in my mind. I think the plastic eyes (sic) are a smashing success! They attach quickly, easily and (with the advantage of now being able to use duct-tape) securely. This also means they can be positioned correctly and maintain that position. In the case of the plastic eyes, I only needed to cut the four slits on the top and bottom of eye-surround in order to create a glove-like fit between the eyes and the internal contours of the sockets. The first eye I installed, I did the bending first and then attached the eye. The second time, I only cut the slits, attached duct-tape and then did the bending while pressing the tape into position. I think the second method is best because it means you will never bend the material more than is necessary in order to secure a good fit. Also the plastic may be tough but it bends surprisingly easily when slit in the pattern you recommend and thumb pressure is applied from behind. I chose to experiment with the Karloff Frankenstein which is likely the most difficult of all the masks to work with because the eye-opening is the narrowest and the heavy lids offer an obstruction -- I couldn't resist installing one more pair of eyes, and chose the Glenn Strange Frankie -- I am, delighted with the result. The Creature "A" eyes lock into place easily and offer a striking contrast to "B". A major improvement! BUT HERE'S THE BIG NEWS! The sun finally came out and I had a close look at the (plastic) eyes. Only then did I finally appreciate what you meant by describing them as "back painted". They reflect light in the same way real eyes do and the irises and flecks of blood appear to float in three-dimensional space beneath the lenses! This is a truly MAJOR INNOVATION, my friend, and I've never heard of anything like it before! Quite apart from the problem of the epoxy coating eventually turning yellow, I've never seen "front painted" eyes that look as realistic as these -- BRAVO! Frankly, I don't think it would be an exaggeration at all to call them "3-D Eyes". |
Eyes that you can install in your own masks! |
These are the same great eyes that I use in my Mask Doctor studio to install in client's masks. |
| These new eyes are made of a thin plastic, which when trimmed, according to the instructions, will easily conform to the contours of the inside of your mask. |
